DiNoto Lee Taps 1st Media Chief

Now surpassing billings of $60 million, DiNoto Lee has hired its first media director, Stormi Dykes, who will oversee media planning and buying, as well as help shape the strategic development of the nearly 3-year-old shop.
Dykes, 34, formerly was vice president, associate media director at Saatchi & Saatchi in San Francisco, working on Cooking.com and E-Loan. She began her career as an assistant media planner at San Francisco’s J. Walter Thompson in 1987.
At DiNoto Lee, she will work with three staffers to plan and buy media. The agency handles planning and non-broadcast-buying duties for about half of its clients, including Dash.com and Deja.com. Outside shops, such as Creative Media, handle its broadcast buying.
Agency partner Esther Lee, who, with creative director Greg DiNoto, interviewed about 20 people for the post, said of Dykes: “Her value set matches ours in terms of what she thinks is important. It’s about going after what you want but doing it in a way that you respect your colleagues.” Or, as Dykes recalled, “One of the first things Esther said was, ‘We have a no-assholes policy here.’ “
Dykes, who received offers from five other New York shops–all larger–said she was lured by a chance to “shape a culture.”
“A lot of agencies talked about [integrating disciplines], but DiNoto Lee was the only one actually that showed me the creative,” Dykes said. “I just thought that was really telling. That should be of as much interest to me as” what the billings are.
