Diamonds in the Buff

Alluring nude models pose in a new print campaign as part of the Diamond Trading Co.’s annual holiday marketing push.

The ads, from J. Walter Thompson in New York, illustrate different diamond cuts with stylized black-and-white photos of a man and woman embracing. The silhouettes of their bodies create the shape of the varying cuts. For example, in the ad for the heart-shaped diamond, the couple’s heads form the rounded top of the heart, and their arms create the point at the bottom.

“We wanted to visualize how different couples can reflect their love for each other,” said shop creative director Ed Evangelista, who partnered with cd Chris D’Rozario on the campaign.

Four ads showing the oval, teardrop, heart and marquise cuts will run on consecutive right-hand pages and appear in November issues of magazines such as Vogue, In Style, Vanity Fair and Outdoor. The diamonds are shown alone, as opposed to being set in jewelry as in previous campaigns by JWT. Portrait and fashion photographer Howard Schatz shot the photos.

The romantic ads will run in conjunction with a continuation of last year’s humorous campaign, which couples diamond jewelry with pithy copy.
