DGA Nominates 5 Directors for Top Honor

NEW YORK The Directors Guild of America has named five nominees for its award for outstanding directorial achievement in commercials for 2003.

First-time nominees include Lance Acord of Park Pictures in New York, David Fincher of Anonymous Content in Los Angeles and Errol Morris of @radical.media in New York. The other two nominees are Noam Murro of Biscuit Filmworks in Santa Monica, Calif., who was also nominated last year, and Joe Pytka of Pytka in Venice, Calif. Pytka has been nominated 14 times for the DGA award and has won three times.

The winner will be named at the 56th annual DGA Awards dinner on Feb. 7 in Los Angeles.

Acord was nominated for “Wake Up Call,” which he directed for Adidas and TBWA\180 in Amsterdam, Netherlands; “Cross Country Spirit” for Nike and Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore.; and “Part Car, Part Religion” for Mitsubishi and Deutsch in Marina del Rey, Calif.

Fincher was nominated for “Gamebreakers” for Nikegridiron.com and Wieden; “Speed Chain” for Nike and Wieden; and “Beauty for Sale” for Xelibri Phones and Mother in London.

Morris garnered his nomination for “Pager” and “Alternative Fuel” for Miller and Wieden; “Bernard” and “Kathryn” for Nike and Wieden; and “Meanwhile” for Cisco and Ogilvy & Mather in New York. While Morris has never been nominated in the commercial category before, he was nominated in the documentary category in 1999 for “Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred Leuchter Jr.”

Murro was nominated for “Birthday” for the California Milk Processor Board and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco; “Beautiful” for Saturn and Goodby; and “Mr. Way Too Much Cologne Wearer” for Anheuser-Busch’s Bud Light and DDB in Chicago.

Pytka was nominated for “23 vs. 39” for Gatorade and Element 79 Partners in Chicago; “Prodigy” for IBM and Ogilvy in New York; and “Shakespeare” for Nextel and TBWA\Chiat\Day in New York.

Past winners include Baker Smith of Harvest Films in Santa Monica, Calif., who won the honor last year, and Bob Kerstetter, co-founder and creative director at Black Rocket Euro RSCG in San Francisco.
