Denver’s Ad Community Salutes Finlon

An unstinting devotion to community and industry has earned Cathey McClain Finlon this year’s Silver Award for lifetime achievement from the Denver Advertising Federation.
Finlon, 52, chairman and chief executive officer of McClain Finlon Advertising in Denver, was feted at a DAF luncheon last month. More than 300 members of the local ad community turned out for the event.
“She was overdue for this [award],” ad club president Terri Belver said of Finlon, who was chosen for her leadership in the industry and involvement with local charities and civic organizations.
“It’s a very fine honor,” Finlon said. “The Denver Ad Federation is really about being part of a community. Over the years, they’ve given me great support.”
Finlon joined the agency that bears her name 16 years ago, when it was known as Kuper Advertising and located in Boulder, Colo. Since gaining sole ownership in 1989, she has grown the shop at a rate of more than 30 percent a year. Billings now stand at about $40 million, with clients including New Century Energies, Red Robin International, Sun Microsystems, The Denver Post and Johns Manville.
In her 20-plus years in the field, Finlon has specialized in strategic planning, implementing programs for Rocky Mountain clients including Head Sports, the Rocky Mountain News and Keystone Ski Resort. She also is a past chairman of DAF.
Finlon was chosen by DAF board members and past recipients of the award. Last year’s recipient, Christa Reich of Reich Communications, presented Finlon with the award. Other past winners include Mary Brown of the Colorado Lottery, Karsh & Hagan co-founder Tom Hagan and Tausca Schillaci of KMGH-TV.
