David Parkin, who last month started work as creative director at Deardorff Associates in Wilmington, Del., took a substantial pay cut in his first job in advertising in 1984—a rarity for someone only three years out of college.

But Parkin, 49, hadn’t been bumming around Europe following his graduation from Utah State University. An All-American free safety as a junior, he was drafted after getting his bachelor’s degree in fine arts by the Detroit Lions and played three years in the National Football League—the last two with the Philadelphia Eagles.

When he was cut by that team, it was time for Parkin, the son of a Salt Lake City adman, to start the career he had originally intended for himself.
