Creative Shake-up at Blue Sky Agency

ATLANTA The Blue Sky Agency has promoted Mike Schatz to creative director from associate creative director, replacing Tim Smith, who left to start his own shop, the company said.

Smith and his partner, former Crispin Porter + Bogusky copywriter Chris Breen, opened Breen Smith Advertising this week with clients such as Lowe’s Financial, Allgood Pest Solutions, JBoss, TradeKing, Ripple and Octane Coffee.

“Our initials are BS and our office is in an old whorehouse,” Smith said. “Things couldn’t be better.”

Schatz, 37, has been with the independent Altanta shop for seven years. He joined as a copywriter and most recently was leading creative efforts for three of Atlanta’s professional sports teams: the Braves (baseball), Hawks (basketball) and Thrashers (hockey). He also was lead creative on the agency’s account with Moe’s Southwest Grill.

He will now lead a 12-person creative department.

“Our clients were requesting Mike to work on their accounts,” said Rob Farinella, agency president.

The change was part of a six-month transition, Farinella said. The shop has been hiring new creative and account staffers in recent months, with more additions to come, he said.

When not creating advertising, Schatz is a stand-up comedian and provides the voice of the Emory on Cartoon Network’s Aqua Teen series.

“Mike is a special talent,” Farinella said. “Not only is he a brilliant creative and truly one of the funniest people I have ever been around, but he is grounded in the reality of what makes strategic sense for the client.”

Prior to joining Blue Sky, Schatz worked a freelance copywriter and was on staff at Catspaw Productions, an independent Atlanta shop that specializes in radio advertising.

Smith previously worked at BBDO in New York, WestWayne in Atlanta and DDB Needham in Chicago. Breen previously worked for Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Miami.
