Corkage Fee

For Korbel Champagne Cellars, the millennium is an Earth-stopping event. At least as far as its advertising goes.
In a new spot created by Carmichael Lynch, Minneapolis, two astronauts orbiting Earth prepare to celebrate the new year by uncorking a bottle of champagne. Unfortunately, in so doing they cause the planet to stop rotating, putting a halt to celebrations on the ground. The reason: the champagne is not Korbel.
The new spot broke over the weekend during telecast of the 1999 Breeders Cup, and kicks off the Guerneville, Calif., company’s traditional fourth-quarter ad push.
The spot is also part of Korbel’s year-long effort to milk the millennium hoopla. Stunts have included a practice party tour and a five-foot-tall, 370-pound champagne bottle billed as the largest ever made.
