CL Loses Another Media Executive

CHICAGO — The revolving door in the media department of Interpublic Group’s Carmichael Lynch swung again last week, as media director, senior partner Shane Ankeney left to join Doner in Detroit as senior director of media connection strategies. Replacing him is media director, partner Corey Johnson, CL’s fourth media director in as many years, as the discipline continues to search for an identity within the creatively driven shop.

Johnson, who has been with the Minneapolis shop for just 14 months, takes over a 20-person department. He joined CL from Bozell Kamstra, also in Minneapolis.

CL’s media unit also has bumped up against larger media operations, including IPG sisters Initiative Media North America, which shares American Standard, and Media First International, which shares Northwest.

CL handles planning and buying for roughly three-quarters of its $300 million in business, including Harley-Davidson and Gibson Guitars.

Johnson cedes areas of expertise in competing for media accounts against bigger agencies, but he thinks the department can make the case of keeping creative and media together.

CL president John Colasanti said the churn in the media director’s office is due only to the agency being unable to find the right person. Yet, he admitted, “You have to understand that when the spotlight shines on CL, it’s going to shine on [the creative] department.”

“We have to demonstrate that media is not a commodity,” Johnson said. “It’s our onus to rise to that challenge and show it’s not.”

Ankeney joined CL in late 2001 from TBWA\Chiat\Day, where he worked with Doner executive media director Fred Sattler. Ankeney’s duties at Doner will be to bridge media and account planning.
