City National Banks on M&C Saatchi

LOS ANGELES City National Bank named independent M&C Saatchi the winner of its $3 million creative and media review, the company confirmed.

The Santa Monica agency bested three other California agency finalists, including independent Doner, Newport Beach, Interpublic Group’s Campbell-Ewald, Los Angeles, and WPP Group’s Ogilvy & Mather, Culver City. The incumbent, WPP Group’s Grey, Los Angeles, did not defend.

“Our priority was to find an advertising agency with broad capabilities, a track record of success and ability to deliver some fresh strategic thinking,” said Thomas R. Miller, CNB’s executive vice president and director of marketing, in a statement.

The first work is expected in the first quarter of next year.

“We look forward to bringing our Brutally Simple Thinking approach to this competitive and crowded market,” said Huw Griffith, CEO of M&C Saatchi, in a statement. Griffith said Saatchi would team with Aegis Group’s Carat USA to handle media planning and buying.

The review, conducted by Select Resources International of Santa Monica, Calif., was launched in July and cut to the four finalists last month [Adweek Online, Sept. 2].

The Beverly Hills-based bank, California’s second-largest independent with 55 offices, spent $600,000 on measured media through March 2005, according to TNS Media Intelligence.
