Cingular Calls Review

Cingular, the newcompany formed by the merged wireless operations of SBC Communications and BellSouth, has launched a review for its more than $20 million His-panic advertising account, sources said last week.

The competition is being handled by Wanamaker in Atlanta, the same consultancy that is managing Cingular’s $250 million review for its general market advertising account. A decision in that contest was expected late last week.

Candidates for the Hispanic business are expected to meet with the client this week for a briefing on a creative assignment.

Cingular, which until now had operated under the code name “NewCo,” last week introduced its new identity with print advertisements in Investor’s Business Daily, The New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. The ads were created by GSD&M in Austin, Texas, an SBC agency and a finalist in the general market review. GSD&M was the last agency to present to Cingular’s selection committee last Friday, following BellSouth incumbent WestWayne and BBDO Worldwide, both Atlanta. The new wireless company has its headquarters in Atlanta.

Separately, San Antonio-based SBC Communications is nearing a decision in its own Hispanic advertising agency review, having heard presentations from three finalists. Industry sources have said Bromley Communications in San Antonio, LatinWorks in Austin and one undisclosed Dallas agency are participants. The account is estimated at $17 million.
