Chocolatier Seeks Agency Match

NEW YORK Godiva Chocolatier has contacted agencies about pitching its estimated $5 million account.

Godiva’s vice president of marketing, Michael Simon, said the review was by invitation only. Independent New York shop Margeotes Fertitta + Partners, which has handled the account since 1986, will participate, he said.

Omnicom Group’s BBDO and WPP Group’s Young & Rubicam are both on the roster of Godiva parent Campbell Soup Co., but BBDO handles Masterfoods M&Ms and Snickers, a potential conflict. Y&R is on the Cadbury-Schweppes beverage roster.

Godiva spent as much as $7 million on ads in 1998, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus. But spending tapered off since then, down to $3 million in 2002 and less than $1 million through August of this year. The maker of premium chocolates is located in New York.
