CEA Taps Walter to Oversee All Media Operations

APL’s GMC Truck Veteran Set to Lead Chevy, Diversified Accounts
DETROIT–Campbell-Ewald Advertising has created a new top media position and hired an executive from fellow Interpublic Group agency Ammirati Puris Lintas for the job.
Nancy Walter joins the Warren, Mich., agency as head of all media operations. She will lead the media teams dedicated to the agency’s largest client, General Motors’ Chevrolet division, as well as its diversified accounts, which include Whirlpool, Raytheon and OfficeMax. CEA does strategic media planning for Chevrolet, while GM’s Mediaworks unit handles media buying.
Walter previously worked at APL in New York as a senior vice president and group director of media planning on the agency’s GMC truck account, which is said to be troubled [Adweek, March 15]. Walter and Lou Schultz, CEA vice chairman and president of sister shop C-E Communications, worked together from 1987-94 when Campbell-Ewald was known as Lintas Campbell-Ewald and worked more closely with APL.
Walter could not be reached for comment by press time.
Before the creation of Walter’s position, her duties were shared by two executives, Schultz said. Bob Mitchell, now heading the agency’s collateral work for Chevy, was in charge of Chevy media. Bob Gervason, who is moving on to another CEA management job, was media director of the diversified accounts.
“I never really believed in the efficacy of having two separate media directors,” Schultz said. “I thought this was a great time to have one champion for the entire communications process here.”
Walter’s first tasks will include hiring about 30 new staffers in the media department, including an additional strategic communications planning director for Chevy.
“We are going to do full communications planning on all of the brands,” Schultz said. In addition to Chevy national advertising, CEA assumes regional ad duties on April 1 as part of GM’s massive marketing restructuring.
Walter’s move to the Midwest is a homecoming of sorts. A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., she attended Michigan State University in East Lansing.
