Calhoun Pivots for Webster Bank

Webster Bank has bowed its first work from Mintz & Hoke starring Jim Calhoun, Connecticut’s beloved basketball coach.
The University of Connecticut coach draws parallels between his personal beliefs and those of the Webster bank, based in Waterbury, Conn., in two commercials.
“The coach is known for doing things the right way and not cutting corners,” said Chuck Borghese, creative director at Mintz & Hoke, Avon, Conn., who wrote the TV spots working with art director Don Carter.
The Calhoun spots will run on Connecticut stations this month with a new round of ads scheduled to break in the first quarter.
Calhoun was signed to a three-year contract with Webster this spring after the men’s team won the Big East championship. He previously appeared in product-oriented ads developed by Pagano Schenck & Kay, Boston.
Webster split with Pagano this fall and assigned its estimated $3-5 million account to Mintz & Hoke without a review.
The agency is currently developing a $3 million ad and public relations campaign for Webster Bank’s new online mortgage site, The site’s ads will also appear in the first quarter. K
