Cable Net, Orbitz Partner on Web

NEW YORK Sports media giant ESPN said today that it is teaming with online travel service Orbitz to launch ESPN Sports Travel Powered by Orbitz, a collaborative sub-section of ESPN.com that plans to be “the ultimate online, sports-focused travel resource” for consumers.

ESPN Sports Travel Powered by Orbitz will offer sports-travel planning information and tools for more than 50 major North American cities (16 at launch with others following in the coming weeks). The site will provide users with the ability to book hotels, vacation packages, flights and destination services on Orbitz.com. Marketing is expected to support but was not disclosed.

Planned content for the site also includes or will include travel articles about major sports towns, events and experiences from ESPN.com, ESPN The Magazine and contributing writers; a Sports Fans’ Guide editorial section on cities, including in-town tips, sports bar and restaurant reviews, addresses and maps; general recommendations and average daily weather; the Power Weekend, ideas for perfect sports getaways; a hot list of the top spots in the best sports towns in America; and sports schedules and a calendar of events.

“Sports and travel are both key aspects to the lives of the millions of monthly ESPN.com users,” John Kosner, svp and general manager, ESPN News Media, Bristol, Conn., said in a statement. “Whether traveling on business and looking for a great spot to catch the game, or planning a quixotic tour of North America’s ballparks, ESPN and Orbitz are giving fans the resources they might need.”
