1st Quarter Productivity Revised Upward

American workers were more productive in the first quarter than was previously reported. U.S. non-farm productivity rose 1.9 percent, the Labor Department said, revising that data up from 1.6 percent. The previous quarter saw an increase of just 0.7 percent.

Retail Sales Up for Apparel, Discounters

Analysts had expected lackluster retail-sales performances in May because many store chains have reported excessive inventory and have had to discount merchandise. But Wal-Mart Stores, the world’s largest retailer, posted an increase of 2.1 percent in same-store sales, or sales at stores open for at least a year. Sales at J.C. Penney Co. rose 3.2 percent.
