Bell to Oversee Nokia for Bates Group

NEW YORK Bates Group has tapped John Bell to act as the main client contact for its newly acquired Nokia business-to-business advertising account in the post of vice president, client engagement partner.

Bell, who previously worked on Nokia when he was at The Ryan Partnership in Dallas in the late 1990s, was one of the key players on the Bates Group pitch team. Others included svp, business development director Eric Hyman; svp, account planning director Deana Strauss from DWP/Bates Technology; and regional director John Farrell from marketing services unit 141 in Chicago, sources said.

The Bates Group, a part of London-based Cordiant Communications Group, landed the new integrated assignment following a month-long review against undisclosed contenders, the client confirmed this week [Adweek Online, April 2]. The agency is charged with introducing Nokia to the enterprise market domestically, according to client group manager of industry marketing Lori Follmer.

Bell, 38, most recently an independent consultant, will serve the Irving, Texas, client from a field office in Dallas. The one-person outpost could expand if the need arose through additional business, said Bell, who has experience starting offices. In 1997, he opened a Minneapolis operation to service The Ryan Partnership’s Pillsbury client.
