As beauty brand holding company Underlining’s third anniversary approaches, it’s holding close to its startup origins by bringing on Amanda E. Johnson as chief marketing officer to refine its identity and three makeup and skincare subsidiaries.

Johnson joins Underlining from her role as COO of Mented Cosmetics, a Black women-owned company that bills itself as “pigment-first” by emphasizing its focus on marketing to complexions of “all hues.” Johnson co-founded Mented with fellow Harvard Business School alum KJ Miller in 2016.
