BBDO, Jupiter Drawing Room Take Grand Midas Awards

NEW YORK The New York Festivals named BBDO and South African agency The Jupiter Drawing Room top winners at the third annual Midas Awards today. The Midas Awards honor financial-services advertising.

BBDO in New York took a Grand Midas in the TV category for its ads for Visa: “Barber,” which features Tiki Barber and his identical twin; “The Sheens,” which shows Martin and Charlie Sheen in a video store; and “Yao Ming,” in which the basketball player appears. All ads show the stars having difficulty purchasing items because they are not using a Visa check card. In addition to its Grand Midas, BDDO also won a gold and a silver award for its Visa work.

The Jupiter Drawing Room in Johannesburg, South Africa, won the print Grand Midas for a campaign it created for Nedbank in South Africa. The shop took home the most awards of any agency in the competition, also winning four golds and two silvers for its Nedbank work.

The Kaplan Thaler Group in New York shop won two golds for its Aflac spots that star a duck squawking, “Aflac.” Sedgwick Rd. in Seattle won a gold and a silver for its Washington Mutual Bank ads. Fallon in Minneapolis won a gold and a silver for its Citigroup work.

A total of 18 golds and 18 silver Midas awards were given out this year. Entries were up 16 percent this year to 500, from 34 countries.
