Bateman Gets Global Post at Publicis

NEW YORK Andy Bateman, former director of brand planning for Publicis in New York, said that he has joined the agency’s London office as worldwide account director on UBS.

In the newly created post, Bateman oversees about 40 people servicing the account at different offices in the global network. He was approached about the position last fall by Publicis Worldwide chief operating officer Rick Bendel, to whom he reports. The Publicis Groupe agency network has other worldwide account directors in charge of global business such as Allied Domecq and L’Oreal.

“I’m very interested in clients and their problems,” said Bateman, 35, as he discussed the transition from managing a planning department to running a global account. “I’m interested in the job of advertising, not the job of running people who do advertising. I was looking for a larger canvas to paint on, and this was it.”

Marta LaRock, previously evp, brand planning director at the now defunct D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles in New York, has assumed that role at Publicis in New York. Many of D’Arcy’s clients and staffers were folded into Publicis following Bcom3’s merger with Publicis Groupe. Prior to joining D’Arcy, LaRock spent 12 years at Young & Rubicam.

Bateman had been at Publicis in New York for nearly two years. Before that, he was managing director of consultancy Interbrand Interactive in New York for six months and planning director at J. Walter Thompson in New York for two years.
