Barrett Joins Friendster as Sales VP

SAN FRANCISCO Online network Friendster has hired AOL’s Charles Barrett as vice president of sales, a company representative said.

Barrett, 45, will build a national ad sales team, oversee advertising operations and work with marketing partners, the rep said.

With more than 15 years of marketing and media experience, Barrett most recently served as senior vice president of sales for AOL Media Networks, supervising the Western region. Prior to joining AOL in 2002, he was Yahoo!’s executive director of sales for the Northwest. Barrett joined Yahoo! in 1999 through the company’s acquisition of GeoCities, where he had been vice president of the West Coast region.

“We are thrilled to have Charlie join Friendster,” said Scott Sassa, CEO of Friendster. “He has experience and proven success in building sales organizations from the ground up and scaling them to achieve significant, long-term revenue growth.”

Before he became involved in interactive marketing, Barrett began his media career in the print business at U.S. News & World Report, where he held various positions, and with Disney Publishing, where he was associate publisher for the West Coast. The Dallas native worked in the Washington, D.C., and New York markets in the 1980s before moving to the West Coast.

Friendster is a Mountain View, Calif.-based Internet service with 9 million subscribers. Founded in 2002, it is privately owned and backed by Kleiner Perkins, Benchmark Capital, Battery Ventures and individual investors.
