Austin Kelley Advertising has promoted chief operating officer Jay Shields to president and chief executive.

Shields, 48, will replace Geoffrey Nixon, who will become chairman of AKA here.

The appointment, effective Jan. 1, completes a transition planned four years ago after the death of agency founder Austin P. Kelley.

For Shields the change marks an evolution from overseeing the day-to-day operations of the well-connected agency.
