AT&T “Beat City”

This new AT&T spot feels more like a dated ad for a video game than for the new Sony Ericsson Walkman phone and music player. Driven by computer animation, the commercial opens with a product close-up as a hand flips the phone shut and the music starts to play. A stylish young man then walks through city streets that change in appearance as the music shifts through different styles. Ultimately, the guy walks through a futuristic cityscape on invisible sidewalks suspended in air. The copy “Music & Phone Remixed” appears in windows of the skyline. It’s a lot to sit through to get to the familiar idea that the product is both a phone and MP3 player. In today’s marketplace, that combo deal isn’t so special — and neither is this spot. –Eleftheria Parpis
