Ad Spurt Computer makers, according to Competitive Media Reporting, nearly doubled their ad outlays in the first quarter, helping to grow overall ad spending by more than 9 percent. The largest spenders, auto manufacturers, kept up the pressure as their ad outlays rose more than 15 percent in the period. Only four of the 25 largest (out of 114) advertiser categories posted declines in the March quarter, the worst being cold remedies, the smallest of the top 25, down about 5 percent.
