Apple, Showtime, Gap Win Outdoor Kudos

LOS ANGELES TBWA\Chiat\Day’s outdoor for Apple iPod, Showtime/Red Group’s billboard for Weeds and a Laird + Partners/Starcom tall wall for the Gap won top accolades at the seventh annual Sunset Strip Times Square Billboard Awards at a ceremony at the House of Blues here last night.

The Showtime ad, by creative director Larry Merritt and art director Michael Hathaway, won Billboard of the Year. The Tall Wall of the Year award went to creative director Trey Laird and art director John Camilleri for the “Glove Tree” Gap ad. TBWA\C\D’s Apple creatives Susan Alinsangan, Duncan Milner and Eric Grunbaum won the Alternative Award for the iPod “Dancing Woman.”

Other billboard prizes were awarded by category. Steve Stone, creative director, and Abba Rowland, art director, won for best consumer goods and services for the Domino magazine ad “Play House” by Heat. Arnold Worldwide’s “New Orleans” ad for Southern Comfort won the beverage category. Denise Valez, art director, and Karen Silveira, creative director, picked up the fashion award for Tiffany “Gift” ad.

In the entertainment categories, creative director Loren Schwartz, art director Mark Walker and associate creative director Jeremy Kaplan won the best movie outdoor award for Sony Pictures’ Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo, working for Sony Pictures/Art Machine, defeating outdoor work for Romar Entertainment’s Bloodrayne and Paramount’s Four Brothers. Creative director Brad Johnson and art director Tamara Perumean won the television category for the CBS show Elvis.

The tall wall winners were Dave Peterson, creative director and art director, for Target’s “Movies” ad for consumer goods; “Glove Tree” for fashion; Larry Merritt, creative director, and Todd Heughens, art director, for Showtime’s Fat Actress in TV; and John Blas, creative director, and Arnaldo D’Alfonso, art director, won the movie award for Disney’s Chicken Little.

Times Square-specific awards went to Roca Wear (fashion), Garnier Fructis (consumer goods) and Air Tahiti (entertainment and leisure).

The awards are sponsored each year by the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
