As if they didn’t feel bad enough already, allergy sufferers must also endure the suspicions of other people. According to a HealthScout summary of a Harris Interactive poll, 78 percent of adults feel sorry for people with allergies. But 36 percent think allergic people “overstate the severity of their symptoms,” and 30 percent think “they use them as an excuse to get out of something.”

These skeptics may include the spouses of people with allergies: “Forty-eight percent of allergy sufferers think their spouse or significant other does not think their allergies are a serious health condition.”
