All That jazz

erry MacDonald may be best known as a copywriter, but at last week’s Hatch Awards, he was honored as a jazz drummer.
MacDonald, of The MacDonald Group in Boston, was presented with the L.E. Sissman Award, given each year to an advertising professional who pursues the arts outside work.
MacDonald had his first professional gig at age 14. In his later teens, he learned from jazz greats such as George Shearing and Max Roach as part of a Teenage Jazz Club. Drumming helped pay his college tuition.
As an ad professional, MacDonald has continued to keep the beat, playing with legends such as Alan Dawson and Rebecca Paris.
The Bob Stacy Craftsperson Award, given each year to the person with the desire to excel as a professional and an individual, was given to Laurie Johnson, who works in print production at Boston’s Arnold Communications.
Johnson is known as a true artist and perfectionist who elevates the quality of every project she’s involved in. She’s also known for her infectious (and loud) laughter.–Lauren Wiley
