All-Chicago Shootout for Paper Mate

CHICAGO Paper Mate will hear final presentations on Friday from three Chicago shops about its $5 million account, the client confirmed.

Competing for the business are WPP Group’s Ogilvy & Mather; and independents Fusion Idea Lab and Tom, Dick & Harry, sources said. Barry Calpino, vice president and general manager at Paper Mate, declined to confirm the list; agency officials declined comment.

The incumbent, Interpublic Group’s McCann-Erickson in New York, is not competing for the business. The division of Newell Rubbermaid-owned Sanford in Bellwood, Ill., wanted an agency closer to its headquarters, said Calpino.

A decision is expected early next week. The winning agency will help Paper Mate with new product introductions this summer, which include the Tandem, a combination pen and highlighter, and an update of a mechanical pencil that adjusts automatically, Calpino said. Radio and print are expected.

Paper Mate spent $3 million on advertising in 2002 and $5 million through November of last year, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus.

Paper Mate’s promotions continue to be handled by Interpublic Group’s Momentum in St. Louis.
