With the Winter Olympics underway, technology multinational Alibaba, and a partner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has revealed its virtual influencer Dong Dong (which means Winter in Chinese), designed to promote merchandise for the games.

Created to appear as a 22-year-old woman with an enthusiasm for winter sports, the virtual character will target younger, tech-savvy sports enthusiasts while interacting with audiences through her “authentic human-like features” and “sparkling personality.”

Dong Dong is based on cloud technology with a personality developed by the Alibaba Group’s global research division, the Alibaba DAMO Academy.

Her promotion of Olympic merchandise will lead fans to the official shop on Alibaba’s ecommerce platform Tmall, which will include dedicated live-streamed shows where she will respond to questions through gestures, facial expressions and her human voice which will allow her to perform live talk shows.
