NEW YORKAt the Third Annual Professional Recognition Awards held by the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, Smith & Jones Mktg/Adv/PR/i received a Circle of Distinction Award for the Zero2Nine CD-ROM it produced for client Vassar Bros. Hospital in Poughkeepsie. This is the second national award the West Sand Lake agency has won recently for its work on Zero2Nine, the Painless Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth.Sheri Baron, president, chief strategic officer of Gotham in New York, received The Woman of Achievement in Business Award from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland during its first Charles J. Busta III Lecture in Business series. Katz Interactive Marketing, based in New York, has signed San Francisco-based DigaCast as a client for its Streaming Media Sales Network. Under the agreement, the company, which sells streaming audio advertising, will bring national adver- tisers to the DigaCast Network of sites and digital-only radio stations that reach nearly two million users per month. Patrick Ferguson of Black Logic in New York has directed the latest spot for topical pain reliever Ben Gay for Cline, Davis & Mann. Black Logic, which created a spot for Ben Gay several years ago, was asked to devise a contemporary look, yet maintain the original Ben Gay message. The spot depicts how the product works: As a hand applies Ben Gay to a sore muscle, a 3-D X-ray shows magnified blood cells flowing quickly down a vein, increasing blood flow and providing relief to the area. A trio of 3-D models, representing the active agents, underline the scientific view. Black Logic offers special effects, graphic design, high-end compositing, 2-D and 3-D animation, and complete live-action production. The American Advertising Federation has named Eliot Kang, president and CEO of Kang & Lee Advertising in New York and Los Angeles, one of the seven advertising and media executives ages 40 and younger to be added to its Advertising Hall of Achievement. The other inductees are as follows: August Busch IV, vice president, marketing, Anheuser-Busch; Lee Ann Daly, senior vice president, marketing, ESPN; Gary Epstein, president and chief ex- ecutive officer, Euro RSCG Tatham; Kate Everett-Thorp, president and chief executive officer, Lot21; Richard Kirshenbaum, co-chairman, Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners; and Ann Lewnes, vice president, consumer marketing group, Intel Corp. They will be honored at a luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York on Nov. 8.Crawford Advertising in Syracuse has been named the advertising agency for Visual Technologies, a company that sells and rents audiovisual equipment. To date, agency products for the client include advertising and public relations materials. CA is producing Visual Technologies' new ad series, "Presentation Fears," a collection of presentation mishaps and their solution: Visual Technologies. In addition, the agency is coordinating the client's media placement to target business-to-business outlets, as well as creating new collateral materials. New York production company Beehive has designed a series of spots for ESPN2 to promote the 2000 Summer X-Games. The promos were created to run for the 10 days before the event as tune-in spots counting down to the games. The ads were de- signed to be a specific call to action to supplement the general-awareness campaign created by Wieden + Kennedy, which is running in the weeks leading up to the event. Beehive adapted animating elements from the original spots and embedded them as backgrounds upon which the athletes were matted. Player footage was color-corrected and enhanced so the players would pop up in the foreground against the primarily blue camouflage backdrop.Trispot.com, an on-air Web guide, has launched a radio campaign in New York. The multistation effort was launched by advertising agency Trispot and targets Silicon Alley marketing executives. Tri-spot's method of broadcast advertising, developed specifically for the new-media category, is a way for companies to market their URL offline through the use of shared 60-second commercials. Each ad-vertiser included in a Trispot ad receives 20 seconds of copy that is heard a minimum of 20 times per week per station. The commercials air on top-rated stations for a minimum of three weeks. Trispot creates and produces all commercials at no additional cost to the client.To help promote its new series, Queer as Folk, Showtime Networks, working through The Media Edge in New York, has signed with New York-based Sweet Logo, a media company specializing in nationwide public-venue advertising using complimentary ad-wrapped after-dinner mints. The Queer as Folk mints will be distributed free in restaurants and beauty salons in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles in November. The show premieres Dec. 1. The Biondo Group, a New York-based international branding and design com-pany, was hired by the H.J. Heinz Co. to create a new look for Ore-Ida frozen potatoes that builds on current equity and revitalizes the 40-year-old line in consumers' minds. Part of the overall marketing objective was to leverage the introduction of the Ore-Ida Zip Crisp Resealable Bag, a new packaging technology that allows plastic bags to stand up so they are more visible. The bag is a new format for the category and presents a high profile for the brand.New York-based Roher Public Relations has been hired by Videonics to handle marketing public relations for its digital video products. The client is a technology company that designs digital video-production equipment for broadcast, cable, business, education and government applications. The MWW Group, a public relations firm based in East Rutherford, N.J., has made known that its New York office is the public relations agency for SpaceWorks, a business-to-business sell-side Web- commerce software company. The agency will increase the client's visibility and presence through a strategic media relations campaign.The Stevens Style Group, a marketing- communications agency specializing in high-technology and family-entertainment products, productions and personalities, has made known that its Family Entertainment Division has been retained by Discovery Kids, Discovery Channel's weekend programming block. The New York shop will create and implement a broad-based, multitiered public relations campaign. PENNSYLVANIARefinery, an e-business development firm in Huntingdon Valley, has established an office in Boulder, Colo., and has entered into an alliance with DesRosiers Advertising, a strategic advertising agency in Boulder.
