Adding Up the Ads for Jobs takes

After flattening in July, the market for jobs in advertising, media and marketing sagged badly last month. Judging by the volume of help-wanted classifieds running in Adweek, the expansion in hiring has reached what’s politely referred to as a pause. The obvious villain of the piece is the dot-com category, whose growth helped produce the hiring boom and whose recent woes are having the opposite effect. Will autumn’s usual spurt of hiring bring the job market out of these doldrums? The hopeful sign is that the West nearly broke even last month. It’s the region that led the recovery from 1999’s brief downturn.
