McCann’s Euro Xbox win helps IPG jump 10%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average notched triple-digit gains Friday as employment reports were not as dire as expected. Omnicom Group reported flat first-quarter earnings despite a 12 percent increase in revenue to $1.94 billion (see page 18). That seemed to be enough for investors. On the Big Board, Omnicom shares rose 1.2 percent to close the week at $62.88. Interpublic Group shot up 10.2 percent to $11.96 on the basis of Microsoft moving its European Xbox account to IPG’s McCann-Erickson from Bartle Bogle Hegarty. And British holding company WPP Group, trading as American Depository Receipts on the Nasdaq, climbed 3.5 percent to $36.79, a sign of investor satisfaction. Despite flat first-quarter growth, WPP’s financials were nevertheless stabilizing. —david kaplan
