Ad of the Day: Call of Duty: Black Ops Rezurrection

Finding new and more disgusting ways of destroying the undead

What is it about zombies that's so damn funny? Their stupidity? Their facial expressions? The way they drag themselves across the land, driven by that sad, passionate hankering for human flesh?

Whatever it is, it's played to the hilt in this disgustingly amusing two-minute spot from TBWA\Chiat\Day (working with The Ant Farm and MJZ director Rocky Morton) for Call of Duty: Black Ops Rezurrection, the final chapter in the Activision game franchise's zombie saga. The setting is a comic advertising staple—the test-lab facility—only here the scientists are working tirelessly not to create a better condom or Cheeto but to find optimal ways of surviving and destroying the undead. They're getting pretty good at it, too. One creature gets shot with some sort of laser, and promptly expands and explodes. Another is forced to run on a treadmill, fruitlessly pursuing a dangling brain in some sort of parallel-universe Gatorade experiment. (He eventually gets his lunch, due to poor planning by one of the scientists.) One of the game's new modules involves zombies on the moon—and so the scientists are re-creating those conditions in the lab. "What we're doing here is something special—getting to know zombies inside and out," says the deadpan voiceover, as a janitor slips while wet-vac-ing scattered zombie parts. "We're seeking answers to questions like, 'How do zombies explode when there is no air?' 'How does the vacuum of space affect the zombies' appetite?' We're constantly developing more advanced weaponry and innovating zombie-defense methodology." The results are impressive, as seen in the snippets of gameplay toward the end of the trailer.

You can notoriously play zombies both ways—for shocks or for laughs. This spot triumphantly does both. A truly rotten success.
