Ad Council Honors J&J’s Weldon, KB+P

NEW YORK The Advertising Council presented William Weldon, chairman and chief executive officer of Johnson & Johnson, its 53rd Public Service Award at the organization’s annual dinner last night at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel here.

Kirshenbaum Bond + Partners, New York, received the Ad Council’s Gold Bell for creative excellence for developing the group’s adoption campaign. The agency was selected from 40 volunteer shops that create PSAs for the Ad Council.

WestWayne in Atlanta won the Silver Bell for its youth voter participation campaign, “Pay attention & vote,” and Mullen in Wenham, Mass., earned the bronze award for its “Buzzed driving is drunk driving” campaign.

“We have long had a deep respect for the Ad Council, and all that it has done to tackle some of this country’s most pressing social issues through the effective use of creative and innovative communications,” said Weldon in a statement regarding the award. “We share many of the same objectives and values, and it is a great honor to receive this recognition from such a prestigious organization.”

Under Weldon’s leadership, last year Johnson & Johnson contributed nearly $592 million in cash and products to philanthropic causes worldwide, according to the Ad Council.

“Corporate responsibility and philanthropy have consistently been at the heart of Bill Weldon in his personal and professional endeavors,” said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. “He epitomizes our most distinguished award for public service.”
