About.com Adds Kayak Travel Search

NEW YORK Travel search engine Kayak said it gained a new distribution partner in About.com, the collection of 500 expert sites owned by The New York Times.

Under terms of the multi-year deal, Kayak will power a travel search engine in About’s travel and cities category. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kayak and other travel search engines like SideStep and Yahoo’s FareChase allow users to search several travel sites for flight and hotel information from a single location. Unlike travel agency sites such as Expedia and Orbitz, Kayak does not sell tickets, instead directing users to the travel site to make a purchase. Kayak last month introduced a paid search ad program for travel advertisers.

Kayak is building a partner network to extend the reach of its travel search engine. It signed a deal with AOL last November to power its Pinpoint Travel search engine and also has a distribution deal with USAToday.com, which carries Kayak’s search engine in its travel section.

The deal gives About another performance-advertising partner, joining Google, which displays content-targeted text listings on most About Web pages.
