6 Agency Hopefuls Pitch Petco

LOS ANGELES Petco is evaluating six agencies in the review of creative chores on its estimated $30 million ad account, according to sources.

Shops that have made final presentations are: the incumbent, independent Phelps Group in Los Angeles; Omnicom Group’s DDB in Chicago and Martin/Williams in Minneapolis; independents Doner in Southfield, Mich., and M&C Saatchi in Santa Monica, Calif.; and Publicis & Hal Riney in San Francisco, per sources.

Agency executives either declined comment or could not be reached. A client representative also declined comment.

The review, which began last month, does not include media duties handled by Aegis Group’s Carat [Adweek Online, May 4].

The San Diego-based chain of 790 retail locations selling pets and pet supplies spent $30 million in measured media in 2005, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus.

The most recent campaign by Phelps Group showed Petco employees fascinated by the store’s pet offerings.
