NEW YORK Vodafone has awarded its estimated $1.3 billion consolidated global media planning and buying business to Omnicom Group’s OMD, the telecommunications giant confirmed today.

OMD overcame Aegis Group’s Carat and a special WPP Group Vodafone team in a review.

Carat had added Vodafone’s U.K. media account (worth approximately $80 million) following a pitch as the year began, wresting the assignment from incumbent OMD.

OMD already handled roughly 80 percent of the Vodafone account, and the agency likely adds about $250 million in client business in the current consolidation, according to sources.
