WGN America Will Morph into a National Cable News Network in Prime Time

Nexstar Media’s national cable channel WGN America is moving away from airing re-runs of entertainment programming in prime time, and launching a new slate of news programming. (TVNewser)

According to a release, News Nation will launch this summer with the help of all Nexstar’s 5,400 local journalists plus an entirely new talent and production team to put on the show, which will be produced at WGN in Chicago, Ill. (TVSpy)

The block will run from 8 to 11 p.m. each night. The move effectively creates a new competitor to Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC, but based in Chicago, rather than New York or Washington, D.C. WGN America is available in 75 million homes, nearly as many as the “big three” cable news channels. (THR)
