Vice Media Group introduced a new round of layoffs on Thursday, letting go 17 staffers within Vice Digital and Refinery29. (THR)

In an internal memo, Cory Haik, Vice Media Group’s chief digital officer, said the company wants to “focus on building content for our digital communities in the native ways they consume it.” A joint statement from the Vice Union and R29 Union responded to the layoffs by saying it’s “become a macabre annual ritual” at the company. The layoffs come just a month after Vice Media said it planned to reduce the number of text articles on Vice.com, Refinery29 and other sites it owns by 40%-50% to focus more on video content. (NYT)
