Trump Re-Election Campaign Sues NYT over Op-Ed

By Christine Zosche

The re-election campaign for President Trump is suing The New York Times over an opinion piece that ran in March last year, titled: The Real Trump-Russia Quid Pro Quo. (Adweek)

The campaign filed a libel lawsuit on Tuesday, claiming the op-ed defamed the president by falsely suggesting there had been a conspiracy between his 2016 operation and Russian agents. (Politico)

The piece, which ran in March 2019, argued that the true collusion between Trump and Russia was his administration’s “pro-Russian foreign policy,” which executive editor Max Frankel cast as a response to Russia helping Trump defeat Hillary Clinton in 2016. (Mediaite)

In a statement, Trump campaign senior legal adviser Jenna Ellis argued the Times’ statements were “100 percent false and defamatory” and that “The Times was aware of the falsity at the time it published them, but did so for the intentional purpose of hurting the campaign, while misleading its own readers in the process.” (CBS News)

The lawsuit was filed in New York State Supreme Court. The Trump campaign is seeking compensation the court “may deem proper.” (New York Post)
