Reuters Starts Fact-Checking Initiative, Joins Facebook’s Third-Party Program

Reuters kicked off a new fact-checking initiative Wednesday, and the multimedia news giant also became part of Facebook’s third-party fact-checking program. (Adweek)

The newly created fact-checking unit at Reuters will verify content posted on Facebook and Instagram and identify where media is false or misleading. (Reuters)

The four-person team from Reuters will review user generated video and photos as well as news headlines and other content in English and Spanish submitted by Facebook or flagged by the wider Reuters editorial team. They’ll then publish their findings on the new Reuters Fact Check blog. (TechCrunch)

One thing the team won’t do is fact check advertisements from politicians; Facebook isn’t changing its political ad policy as part of this new partnership. (Engadget)

Terms of the deal were not disclosed but a Reuters rep said Facebook is paying the news service under the fact-checking program. (Variety)
