Oscars: Roma, Favourite Top Nominations with 10 Apiece

The Academy unveiled its 2019 Oscar nominations early Tuesday morning, with The Favourite and Roma leading all films with 10 nods apiece. (THR)

Roma became a game-changer for Netflix as its first Best Picture nominee. The hit musical melodrama A Star Is Born, Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic Vice and the controversial and Best Picture front-runner Green Book were represented across major categories—save for a snub for Bradley Cooper for Best Director. Among the movies nominated for best picture, Black Panther stands out as a nod to Hollywood’s present, representing the first superhero movie and Marvel title to gain such recognition. (CNN)

Additionally, after more than three decades of making films that have collectively established an undeniable cultural legacy, 61-year-old auteur Spike Lee is finally an Academy Award nominee for best picture and director. (Variety)

The Oscars, chosen by the 8,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will be handed out in Hollywood on Feb. 24. The Oscar ceremony looks set to take place without a host after the withdrawal in December of comedian Kevin Hart due to past homophobic comments he made on Twitter. (Reuters)
