Netflix Spending Spree Spurs Subscriber Growth of 5 Million in Second Quarter

Netflix reported that it added 5.2 million subscribers during the second quarter, up from 4.95 million new subscribers during the previous quarter. (THR)

In the U.S., the company packed on 1.07 million streaming subs and added 4.14 million overseas. Wall Street analysts had expected Netflix to add 3.2 million streaming customers in the period (600,000 in the U.S. and 2.6 million internationally), which was in line with the company’s guidance issued in April. The entertainment giant also revealed on Monday that it now boasts 104 million subscribers. Much of the growth has come from outside of the U.S., the company noted. (Mashable)

Netflix also reported profits of 15 cents per share on revenue of $2.79 billion for the quarter, virtually in line with Wall Street’s estimates. Its stock jumped as much as 8 percent on the impressive subscriber growth. (Recode)

It had 51.9 million domestic streaming customers at the end of Q2, up 10.2 percent from last year. International subs, at 52.3 million, are up 44.3 percent. (Deadline)
