By Christine Zosche

The Los Angeles Police Department said it would open an inquiry into how a recruitment ad for its department had appeared on the website for Breitbart, saying that it created “a negative juxtaposition to our core values.” (NYT)

LAPD Chief Michel Moore said Saturday that his department would further look into how an ad featuring a photo of an officer with the caption “choose your future” ended up on the site, noting that it would also investigate possible “spoof/other effort to discredit LAPD.” (The Hill)

“No. LAPD did NOT purchase or otherwise acquire ad space on that website,” Moore said via Twitter. “Senior leadership at LA City Personnel Department also relayed they did not authorize or pay for this ad either. Both Depts s investigating whether spoof/other effort to discredit LAPD.” (THR)

How the advertisement ended up on Breitbart was not much of a mystery to media experts, who noted that online ad buys, particularly those made through Google, target demographics rather than publications and can even follow targeted readers from site to site. (NBC News)
