Disney+ Launch Marred by Connectivity Issues

Disney+, the highly anticipated ad-free streaming service from Disney, has finally arrived—but many users were unable to access it on Tuesday morning as it rolled out. (Adweek)

The technical glitches prevented some users from logging in and created difficulties for others who wanted to watch movies and shows, a result of a problem stemming in part from computer servers operated by another company, according to a person familiar with the matter. (WSJ)

The Disney+ customer help account on Twitter blamed the problems on unexpectedly high demand. “The consumer demand for Disney+ has exceeded our high expectations,” the company said in a tweet at 9:59 a.m. ET. “We are working to quickly resolve the current user issue. We appreciate your patience.” (Variety)

Disney had reportedly prepared to face some system outages on launch day. The company bought BAMTech in 2017 and uses the streaming technology to power Disney+, as well as ESPN+, for the purpose of preventing system outages and buffering. (CNBC)

Shares in Disney led the Dow Jones Industrial Average higher Tuesday, rising 1.5 percent to close at $138.74 on twice its normal trading volume. Netflix stock declined a bit less than 1 percent, to $292.01. (Deadline)
