Box Office: The Bad Guys Topples Fantastic Beasts 3 with $24 Million Debut

By Brad Pareso

DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s The Bad Guys easily won the weekend with an estimated $24 million, more than enough to topple Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, according to Comscore. (THR)

The animated comedy has collected $24 million from 4,009 North American theaters in its debut. In its second weekend of release, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore plummeted to third place with $14 million. After a steep 67 percent decline, it has generated $67 million to date. (Variety)

It’s a far lower start than the $72 million opening of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 a couple weeks ago or the $50 million opening of DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby back in 2017, but The Bad Guys will have a chance to leg out a profit against its reported $70 million production budget as it will be the last family film on the release slate until Pixar’s Lightyear comes out in mid-June. Paramount’s third weekend of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is even coming up strong in second place with a -48 percent hold and a 15.2 million weekend. (Deadline)
