Box Office: Candyman Slashes Its Way to $22 Million Domestic Opening

Candyman earned $22.37 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend at 3,569 theaters, surpassing expectations despite the continuing surge of the delta variant and yet another storm, Ida, affecting East Coast moviegoing. (THR)

Overseas, Candyman had a slower start, opening in 51 international markets and pocketing $5.23 million for a global tally of $27.6 million. (Variety)

For a movie that debuted during the final frame of August, Candyman ranks fourth behind 2009’s Final Destination $27.4 million, 2016’s Don’t Breathe $26.4 million and 2007’s Halloween $26.3 million. (Deadline)

One of the only Hollywood titles to recently be granted a China release date, Disney/20th Century Studios’ Free Guy flew into the market with a No. 1 $23.9 million start. Its full offshore weekend was $37.3 million in 47 markets, and the total overseas is now $100.3 million for $179.6 million global. (Deadline)
