Yes, We’ve Seen This Moscow News 9/11 Ad (It’s No Big Deal)

By Matt Van Hoven

Just because one week when some jerk-offs make a tasteless ad and then the whole world learns about it doesn’t mean the next week every advertisement that broaches the same subject needs to be publicized. Unless of course you’re writing a blog post to say that it doesn’t need to be publicized.

Here’s the deal: late last week Adland sent us a post containing every 9/11 ad known to man. Not wanting to further the debate (because it had been played out here and elsewhere) we passed. And today the world is aghast again with this BBDO work (above) for English-language newspaper, Moscow News.

Except that the ad isn’t at all offensive. Actually, it’s pretty innocuous. The copy reads, “Things hard to explain. In a language you can understand.” The copy would be just as good on an Economist ad with a simple red background, but since the audience is English speaking folk in Moscow it works out just a bit better.
