W+K New York launched two new “This is SportsCenter” spots for ESPN, celebrating the beginning of the MLB playoffs (which kicked off with the Astros’ defeat of the Yankees last night) and the start of the NHL season (which begins tonight).
In “Ice Cream,” Jay Harris and Lisa Kerney enjoy the titular iced dessert in ESPN’s cafeteria, served in mini plastic baseball caps. Only they can’t stop staring at Matt Harvey, at the end of the table, who is eating a mammoth portion out of an actual baseball helmet. “National Anthem,” meanwhile, sees SportsCenter hosts John Anderson and John Buccigross prepare to start the show following the “Star Spangled Banner,” but with Canadian NHL analyst Barry Melrose in the studio there is a slight delay.
Both spots trade in the series’ trademark brand of humor, with fairly simple premises this time around. While certainly not highlights of the long-running series, both spots should please fans of “This is SportsCenter,” with the simple but effective sight gag of “Ice Cream” probably the more entertaining of the two efforts.
