W+K New York Launches ‘The Dunk to End All Dunks’ for Jordan

By Erik Oster

W+K New York teamed up with Blake Griffin and a certain animated Martian for a new spot promoting Nike Jordan’s new Super.Fly 4’s, entitled “The Dunk to End All Dunks.”

The spot opens on Blake Griffin performing an “earth shattering” dunk while practicing with a buddy. Angered that earth shattering is supposed to be his job, Marvin the Martian shows up and threatens to disintegrate Blake when his friend reminds Marvin that he has to allow the NBA star a chance to defend himself, per “cartoon rules.” Blake’s weapon of choice is a dunk contest, and the remainder of the spot sees Griffin squaring off against the pint-sized Martian, who has the advantage of using his own ball. When it looks like Griffin may have been defeated, none other than Bugs Bunny shows up to give him the edge he needs (it’s the Super.Fly 4’s) and soon Blake puts Marvin back in his place.

Fans of Space Jam, Looney Tunes and Blake Griffin should all get a kick out of the fun spot, which manages to capture the spirit of Looney Tunes and turns it into a surprisingly entertaining ad for shoes. Griffin’s acting isn’t exactly top notch, but that hardly matters given the nature of the spot. If there’s a downside, it’s that the ad, which runs over two minutes, could have easily shaved off some of its introduction and been an even better 90-second spot. Still, anyone who enjoys seeing Looney Tunes mixed with basketball, and particularly sports-loving kids, should find plenty to enjoy here and may even feel the need to run out for Griffin’s Super.Fly 4’s. “The Dunk to End All Dunks” also serves as the latest fuel for rumors that a Space Jam sequel is in the works. Whether or not that comes to fruition, we can probably expect to see Griffin and the Looney Tunes characters to make more appearances for the Jordan Brand in the coming months.
