Was Cyber Lions-Winning Skittles Effort Inspired by Dumb 2009 Vid?

Compared to the several other requests we get to draw comparisons between seemingly similar ads, we have to say this one’s quite a stretch. A goofy guy named Ze Frank created his own optical illusion clip of sorts in 2009, and now he’s billing it on his YouTube page as “the original video that skittles ripped off.” The Skittles video he’s referring to of course is BBDO Toronto’s “Touch: Cat” effort for Skittles that picked up a Gold Cyber Lion last week at Cannes, making it only the official win for Canadian Cyber entrants during the festival.

We say the guy’s hitting the pipe after watching his rather juvenile effort (below), though Skittles and BBDO no doubt reached their own level of absurdity with “Touch: Cat.” Do you think Frank really has a dog in this fight? Were the folks at BBDO really inspired by his work as our tipsters allege? According to one Cyber judge, the latter work is “a beautiful idea done in an absurdist, completely on-brand way.” The other? Well, you be the judge.
